Polynesian Culture was Banned by the Missionaries

At the Tiki Village we learned that during the 19th century, Polynesian culture faced significant suppression due to the efforts of European missionaries, primarily from the London Missionary Society (LMS) and later French Catholic missionaries. When these missionaries arrived in French Polynesia, they sought to convert the local populations to Christianity, perceiving the indigenous beliefs, customs, and practices as heathen and immoral. This included traditional religious ceremonies, dances (such as the ‘ori), tattooing, and even the use of native languages.

The missionaries’ influence was bolstered by colonial authorities who often collaborated to enforce bans on these cultural expressions. For instance, traditional tattooing, a significant cultural practice symbolizing social status and identity, was strictly prohibited. Dancing and chanting, central to Polynesian social and religious life, were also banned. The missionaries promoted European customs and Christian religious practices, leading to the erosion of many traditional practices and a significant cultural loss among the Polynesian people.

Revival of Polynesian Culture

We also learned that the revival of Polynesian culture in French Polynesia began in the mid-20th century, driven by a growing sense of cultural identity and resistance to colonial rule. This resurgence was marked by the re-emergence of traditional dances, music, and festivals, which became potent symbols of cultural pride and resistance.

One of the key moments in this cultural renaissance was the establishment of the Heiva festival in 1881, which was initially a colonial celebration. However, it gradually transformed into a major cultural event celebrating Polynesian heritage. By the 1950s and 1960s, the Heiva festival had become a central venue for the performance and display of traditional Polynesian arts, including dance, music, and sports.

The enthusiastic locals at the Tiki Village told us how the Polynesians actually sent a delegation to Samoa to relearn some of the traditional dances, songs and other parts of the culture to make sure that they could revive what was lost during the more than 50 year long ban of their culture.

By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, traditional practices like ‘ori Tahiti (Tahitian dance), tattooing, and the use of the Tahitian language saw a significant resurgence. Schools and cultural institutions dedicated to teaching these traditions were established, ensuring that the rich cultural heritage of French Polynesia was passed down to future generations.
