About São Miguel island
São Miguel is the largest and most populous island of the Azores, an archipelago of nine volcanic islands located in the mid North Atlantic Ocean. It is situated about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) west of Lisbon, Portugal, and is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal.
São Miguel is known for its beautiful natural landscapes, which include lush green forests, scenic coastlines, and stunning lakes and waterfalls. The island is also home to a number of interesting cultural and historical attractions, including churches, museums, and fortresses.
The economy of São Miguel is largely based on agriculture, with the island being known for its production of dairy products, meat, and vegetables. Tourism is also an important industry on the island, with many visitors coming to experience its beautiful natural surroundings and rich cultural heritage.
The island has a population of around 140,000 people, with the majority living in the capital city of Ponta Delgada. The Azores have a mild, subtropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C (50°F) in the winter to 25°C (77°F) in the summer.
Hot springs
The hot springs of São Miguel, also known as the Furnas hot springs, are located in several places on the island. The hot springs are a popular tourist destination due to their natural beauty.
The hot springs are believed to have therapeutic properties and are popular for their ability to alleviate muscle aches, joint pain, and skin conditions. Some people also believe that the hot springs have a positive effect on respiratory issues and stress.
In addition to their therapeutic properties, the hot springs of São Miguel are also known for their natural beauty. The surrounding area is lush and green, with beautiful forests, waterfalls, and volcanic landscapes.
Here’s a guide to some of the best hot springs on São Miguel
Caldeira Velha

Caldeira Velha is one of the most popular hot springs on São Miguel Island. The spring is located in a lush forest park and features several different pools of varying temperatures, as well as a small natural warm waterfall. Kids will love playing in the pools and exploring the surrounding forest of tree ferns and other greenery. Just remember to book your tickets for a specific timeslot online. And most importantly: be sure to bring swimsuits for everyone – the water is quite warm and irresistible!
Furnas
The town of Furnas is another popular hot spring destination on the island.

There are several hot springs in the Furnas area, including the hot springs of Carvão, Chã das Caldeiras, and Poça da Dona Beija. The hot springs of Carvão are located in a wooded area and have a temperature of around 37-40°C (98-104°F). The Chã das Caldeiras hot springs are located in a small valley surrounded by vegetation and have a temperature of around 41-44°C (106-111°F). The Poça da Dona Beija hot springs are located in a secluded area surrounded by vegetation and have a temperature of around 43-46°C (109-115°F). There are several pools to choose from with artificial waterfalls and a natural hot stream to play in.

The Parque Terra Nostra is a botanical garden with a big hot spring area. Visitors can explore several different mud pots and bubbling streams, as well as take a dip in the huge naturally heated pool. A great tip is not wearing swim suits with any white on them. At least they won’t be white anymore after spending a few hours in the geothermically heated waters.
Be sure to try one of Furnas’ famous “cozido” dishes while you’re in town – the dish is cooked underground using geothermal heat!
Lagoa do Fogo

Lagoa do Fogo, or “Lake of Fire,” is an aptly-named hot spring located in a crater lake. The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors cannot swim in these warm waters but it’s possible to see a very geothermically active area where the local cozida dish is cooked in the hot ground. You can also go explore one of the many hiking trails in the area.
